Hip hop has really taken off in the latter 20 years. Initially known as gangsta rap hip hop truly began to make its mark in the pop charts in the United Kingdom at the beginning of the 1990’s. Names like The Fresh Prince and De La Soul were sticking in the charts, and teens of this generation loved it and saw it as something different from what their parents had listened to generations before, it might have surprised them had they have known that hip hop dates back to the beginning of the 1970’s and was originally from New York. In the early stages it was known as rapping and this was first heard of from the MC who introduced the DJ on stage, the MC’s job was to keep the audience entertained. By 1979 rapping or hip hop as it is now known had began to impact on the American charts.

In England it began to take off in the 1990’s Will Smith who is now famous for lots of fantastic films such as Independence Day, Men in Black and I am Legend to name but a few rapped a fantastic summer anthem called summer time. To this day DJ’s play this song whenever the sun shines. It has kept its popularity and will hold memories for many. There were many rap songs released during the 1990’s one of them released by Jason Nevin’s and Run DMC, this song got everyone up on their feet dancing. In the latter end of the 1990’s Eminem took the stage with his slightly less serious version of rap, his videos were famous for upsetting certain stars, but these videos made him all the more popular. His lyrics have also upset some of his family members, one in particular which was wrote allegedly about his mother called ‘cleaning out my closet’. His songs and lyrics although criticised at times have made him millions and he is one of the biggest selling rappers in the world of all time. Selling more than seventy million albums globally, he has won Grammy awards for his work. His lyrics appeal to both the young and old, and if nothing else he has the ability to make people laugh.

There are been many rappers who have graced the charts in the last few years, but on trawling through the internet it is apparent that the greatest rappers/hip hop stars are of all time are considered to be A tribe called quest, Grandmaster Flash, The Beastie Boys, Notorious BIG, Run DMC.
